I started out buying a 1985 CJ-7 from an friend who moved from
Virginia. It was not purchased to be a daily driver, so I
immediately wanted to make the ultimate mud machine out of it.
Unfortunately, it was
lacking the power it needed, so I installed a 350 Chevy and a TH350
automatic. I kept the original AMC running gear and purchased all the
conversion components from Advanced Adapters. To get this
project off the ground, I added a 4" soft ride suspension lift from SkyJacker, a 3" body
lift and an additional 2" lift with some homemade shackles for a total
lift of 9". With the large lift, I had to have some large
tires, so I purchased a set of 38.5" Super Swamper STX's. With
this setup I had the power to churn through any mud
hole I could find. Since this jeep was not for show, I put it in
some really bad places, but never had to use the winch to get it out.
The only draw back to tons of power and big tires is the fall out from
the 50 foot rooster tails. I will try to find some video of me
mudding in it and post it hear so that you can see what I mean.
After a couple of years of off-road fun, I decided to restore the jeep
to it's original or better than factory condition.
